When a quartz tube pops, you’ve got glass shards and halogen gas raining down right onto your wafers. It’s a disaster. That’s why we wrap our IR elements in stainless steel housings. Think of it as a safety cage. If a lamp fails, the housing catches the debris so you don’t have to scrap your entire batch.
Getting the Housing Right
We don’t just throw some steel around the lamp for stability. We build these to handle the actual force of a tube bursting. The goal is to keep the wreckage trapped inside the chassis and far away from your product. But you can’t just squeeze the lamp in there. If the fit is too tight, you get hotspots that burn out the tube early. Too loose? You lose the heat density you need to keep production moving. It’s a balancing act. We spend a lot of time dialing in that gap so you get high throughput without stressing the quartz.
Heat, Metal, and the Real World
We stick with stainless steel because it doesn’t flake or peel during thermal cycling. We avoid fancy coatings because, under extreme heat, those things tend to off-gas or peel off, which is the last thing you want in a cleanroom. One thing to keep in mind: steel has its own thermal mass. Unlike an open-air lamp, the housing holds onto heat. This means your PID controllers need a bit of a tweak to handle the slower ramp-up and cool-down. And don’t skimp on the cooling fans. If the airflow doesn’t match the housing’s footprint, the heat builds up around the connectors. Before you know it, you’re looking at melted wiring or dead sockets.
Making Maintenance Less of a Pain
Nobody likes spending hours dismantling a heating bank just to swap one part. We designed these housings for quick swaps. When a lamp dies, you just pull the element and put in a new one. It’s fast. It keeps the wafer path clean. And most importantly, it means you aren’t introducing a bunch of random particles into the system every time you do a routine repair.
