
Why Most Towel Heaters Actually Die (And How to Stop It)
Here is a little secret about towel rail heaters: it’s rarely the heating element itself that gives up the ghost. Usually, the real culprit is the lead wire connection. Think about it. When an infrared heater is humming along, the spot where the electrical wire meets the quartz tube gets incredibly hot. Most cheap heaters just use some basic glue or a loose crimp to hold it together. That’s a recipe for disaster. Eventually, the insulation cracks, the wires oxidize, and—pop—you’ve got a dead-short.
The slow burn
There’s this thing that happens called thermal migration. Basically, the heat doesn’t stay in the element; it creeps backward toward the wiring. If that seal isn’t airtight and built for high heat, the PVC or silicone insulation literally bakes. It gets brittle. It starts flaking off like old paint. Once that happens, the live wires touch, and your heater becomes a very expensive piece of scrap metal. We do things differently. Instead of just slapping some glue on the wire, we use a multi-stage sealing process. It creates a vacuum-tight barrier that keeps oxygen away from the connection. No oxygen means no oxidation. Simple as that.
The problem with “Contractor Grade”
If you look at spec sheets, a lot of these heaters look identical. But look closer at the seal. Low-end units use generic potting compounds. The problem is that these materials shrink as they cool down, leaving tiny micro-gaps. Moisture sneaks in, the wire corrodes, and the whole thing fails. We use high-density, ceramic-infused sealants. The trick here is that they expand and contract at the exact same rate as the quartz tube. They move together. No gaps, no leaks, no surprises.
One quick heads-up
There is a trade-off, though. Because our seal is so much tougher, the lead wire is a bit stiffer. Don’t try to bend these wires at sharp angles during installation. If you kink the lead, you might crack that seal we worked so hard to build. Just give the wire a nice, generous loop so there’s no mechanical stress on the junction. Keep your wiring clean, and your heater will actually last.
