Most generic heaters use cheap adhesives. They work fine for a week, but then the heat kicks in. The glue bakes, it cracks, and suddenly you’ve got a gap. When Wires Get “Baked”
Infrared lamps get incredibly hot. That heat doesn’t just stay in the bulb; it travels right down the wires. If you’re using standard PVC or some low-grade silicone, the insulation just can’t take it. It gets brittle. We call this “baking out” the wire. It’s a multi-stage process: mechanical crimping, high-temp sealing, and a waterproof jacket. It’s the only way to actually isolate the electricity from the rain and humidity. Pro tip: keep an eye on the seal. If you see bubbles or weird discoloration after a few uses, it’s going to fail. A clean, solid seal keeps the resistance steady and stops the dangerous arcing.
The Trade-off
Now, there is a catch. Waterproofing everything makes the wires bulkier. A heavy-duty sealed wire isn’t as bendy as a cheap one. You can’t just jam it into a tight chassis and hope for the best, or you’ll risk a kink. When you’re designing the housing, give the cables some breathing room. A wider bend radius means no stress fractures, which means your heater actually lasts.
